How Can You Safely Trim Your Cat’s Nails at Home?

Cat getting nails trimmed
Because even the sassiest paws need a little maintenance Trimming your cat’s nails doesn’t have to be a full-on wrestling match. With the right prep (and a few treats), you can keep those claws in check- without the chaos.

Here’s how to make nail trims less hiss, more bliss.

You Will Need:

  • A quiet, well-lit space
  • Cat-specific nail trimmers (avoid human clippers)
  • A towel (for gentle wrapping, if needed)
  • Treats and gentle praise

How to Do It:

  1. Find a calm moment- after a nap or meal works best.
  2. Go slow- maybe one paw at a time.
  3. Gently press each paw to expose the claws.
  4. Trim just the tip- before the pink “quick” (the part with nerves).
If you hit the quick and there’s a little bleeding- don’t panic. Gently press a tissue to the nail or use a vet approved powder (or even cornstarch) to stop the bleeding. If bleeding doesn’t stop, don’t wait to visit us and we can help you out!
  5. Reward with treats and affection, even if you only get a few claws done.

And If It’s a Struggle…

Not every cat wants a mani-pedi. If UR cat turns into a tiny lion mid-trim or if you’re not sure what’s safe to cut- don’t risk it. Sometimes, a quick vet visit is the safest move.

At URvet Care, we’re happy to show you how to trim safely, check if something’s wrong with your cat’s claws, or talk through alternatives like soft caps or scratching solutions.
