How Do I Know If My Dog Has Cancer?

Cancer is more common in dogs than we’d like to think- and some pups are more at risk than others. That is why, we’ll walk you through signs to watch for, which breeds need earlier screening, and how our trained veterinary oncology experts are willing to walk with you every step of the way.

Spot the Paw-sible Signs

Cancer can hide in plain sight, but these quick clues should get your radar barking:

  •  Lumps or bumps that don’t budge
  • Sudden weight loss or appetite snooze
  • Chronic cough or trouble breathing
  • Wounds that won’t heal
  • Limping, swelling, or odd bleeding

Since cancer tends to show up around age 8 in dogs, we recommend starting yearly screenings by age 7- or even earlier (around age 4) for large breeds, purebreds, or dogs with a family history.

Which Breeds Are More at Risk?

According to The Vetiverse, here’s the rundown:

  • Bernese Mountain dog
  • Rottweiler
  • Boxer
  • Briard
  • Golden Retriever
  • French bulldog, and;
  • Bullmastiff
