Is It Heatstroke? Summer Safety Tips for NYC Dogs and Cats

What Is Heatstroke in Pets?

Heatstroke occurs when a pet’s body temperature rises dangerously high and they can no longer regulate it. Unlike humans, pets can’t sweat through their skin, so they rely on panting and limited sweat glands in their paws to cool down. In high temperatures or humid conditions, these cooling methods often aren’t enough.

Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs and Cats

  • Heavy panting or drooling
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy or unresponsiveness
  • Bright red gums or tongue
  • Staggering, collapse, or seizures in severe cases

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately. Delaying treatment can lead to organ failure or death.

NYC-Specific Heat Hazards

City living brings unique challenges for pets in the summer:

  • Hot Sidewalks: Concrete and asphalt can reach over 125°F—enough to cause serious paw burns within seconds.
  • Parked Cars: Temperatures inside cars can rise 20°F within 10 minutes. Even if the windows are cracked, this is life-threatening.
  • Rooftop Play Areas: These can be suntraps without natural shade or proper ventilation, especially dangerous for short-nosed breeds like pugs or bulldogs.

Tips to Prevent Heatstroke

  • Walk your dog early in the morning or after sundown to avoid peak heat hours
  • Carry a portable water bottle and collapsible bowl at all times
  • Provide shade, cooling vests, or cooling mats during outdoor play
  • Keep your pet inside during hot afternoons with AC or fans running
  • Use booties to protect your dog’s paws on hot surfaces

When to Visit the Vet

If your pet shows any signs of overheating—especially excessive panting, vomiting, or collapsing—don’t wait. Cool them down with water-soaked towels and get to the nearest URvet Care clinic right away. Time is critical.

Pro Tip: Preventive care matters. Ask our team about hydration strategies, heatstroke first-aid kits, and breed-specific risks during your next check-up.
