Toxic Plants & Cat Safety: What NYC Pet Parents Need to Know

A quick guide to safe (and not-so-safe) houseplants for your curious feline

Why Do Cats Eat Plants?

Sometimes it’s boredom. Sometimes it’s play. And sometimes, it’s just instinct. Whether your cat is batting at a hanging vine or taking a bite out of your latest pothos, plant-chewing behavior is super common- but not always safe.

Plants to Keep Out of Reach

Here are just a few of the popular houseplants that are toxic to cats:

  • Lilies- Even small amounts can cause kidney failure
  • Pothos (Devil’s Ivy)- Can lead to mouth irritation, drooling, and vomiting
  • Sago Palm- Highly toxic, can cause liver failure
  • Snake Plant- Mildly toxic; may cause nausea and vomiting
  • Aloe Vera- Healing for humans, harmful to pets

Cat-Safe Plant Picks

Want greenery that won’t send you to the vet? These pet-safe plants are a great place to start:

  • Spider Plant
  • Areca Palm
  • Calathea (Prayer Plant)
  • Bamboo Palm
  • Cat Grass or Wheatgrass

(Pro tip: Cat grass is a great distraction that gives your pet something safe to chew!)

What If My Cat Eats a Toxic Plant?

If you think your cat may have eaten something unsafe- don’t wait. Symptoms like vomiting, drooling, difficulty breathing, or lethargy should be taken seriously.

We offer 24/7 walk-in emergency care at our Astoria and Midtown clinics, so you’re never alone if something goes wrong.

You don’t have to give up your green thumb to be a good cat parent. Just choose your plants with care- and keep the toxic ones out of reach (or out of the house altogether).
