Traveling with Dogs in New York: Vet-Approved Essentials for Every Trip

Whether you're hopping on a train to Montauk or grabbing a car to visit grandma in Jersey, traveling with your dog in or out of NYC can feel like packing for a toddler who eats socks. But don’t worry- we’ve got your leash.

Here’s a dog-friendly checklist that keeps your pup comfy, safe, and ready for whatever your travel plans throw at you (including traffic on the FDR).

The Right Carrier or Harness

City rules = travel rules. If you’re riding the subway, your dog technically has to fit in a bag (yes, even if they’re the size of a small horse- shoutout to creative commuters). For road trips or trains, choose:

  • A sturdy, breathable carrier for small dogs
  • A crash-tested car harness for medium/large pups

Bonus: They make for great nap pods mid-journey.

Water & Collapsible Bowl

Hydration > frustration.

Always carry a travel water bottle with a built-in bowl or a lightweight collapsible option. Dogs can get dehydrated quickly, especially in warm cars or crowded train platforms.

Snacks (But Make Them Smart)

Treats = peace offering.

Pack some digestive-friendly snacks that won’t upset your dog’s stomach during the ride. And if your pup gets motion sickness? Talk to your vet ahead of time about safe meds or calming chews.

Familiar Items

New place, weird smells, strange people. Give your dog a piece of home:

  • A favorite toy (avoid squeaky ones on planes unless you enjoy side-eyes)
  • Their blanket or travel mat
  • A shirt that smells like you

These little comforts go a long way toward calming travel jitters.

First Aid Must-Haves

City dogs are tough, but travel comes with surprises. Pack:

  • Any medications your dog is on
  • Vet records or a digital copy of vaccination history
  • A few first aid basics (gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers for splinters)

And if something seems off on the road, remember: URvet Care’s Astoria and Midtown clinics are here for 24/7 emergency care. You never have to go it alone.

Bonus: Get UR Pet Travel Certificate- Your Dog’s Passport to Adventure

Planning to cross state lines or head overseas with your pup? Don’t let paperwork be the reason you cancel those vacation plans.

That’s where Pet Travel Certificates come in. It’s like your dog’s passport—except cuter, cleaner, and actually useful. This card includes:

  • Verified health certificate for travel
  • Vaccine records (no digging through old emails)
  • Info tailored to airline and destination requirements
  • Peace of mind if you’re traveling internationally or just state-hopping

We’ll handle the forms and fuss—so you can focus on the fun.
