When Should I Take My Pet to the Emergency Vet? 7 Clear Signs

Living in NYC means- dodging traffic, catching subways all while balancing a coffee in your hand. But, when UR pet seems off, it’s time to hit paws and pay attention. Because some things can’t wait- and pet emergencies are one of them.

At URvet Care, we know that acting at the right time means more cuddles and more tomorrows for your furry friend. Here are 7 early signs that your pet needs emergency care:

  • Troubled Breathing
Consistent or increasing panting when resting, wheezing or struggling to catch their breath are not just ruff- they are signs your pet needs help.
  • Sudden Weakness or Collapse
If your pet is suddenly unable to stand, walk or even keep their eyes open, it could mean exposure to toxins or neurological distress.
  • Continuous Diarrhea or Vomiting
Occasional tummy upset turning into a marathon (or worse, there’s blood) is NOT NORMAL. Dehydration can sneak up fast- and trust us, it’s no walk in the bark.
  • They Ate What?!
Chocolate, grapes, your sock, or half a hot dog off the sidewalk- NYC pets are nothing if not creative. Some of these snacks are harmless, but many can be toxic. If your pet has consumed something they shouldn’t, don’t wait for symptoms to appear.
  • Seizures or Strange Behavior
Sudden confusion, absent staring and not responding to their name are quiet sounds of loud problems. Seizures and neurological issues may be subtle, but they are serious.
  • Bleeding That Doesn’t Stop
Visible bleeding, pale gums, or unexplained bruising? If your pet is leaking more than love, it’s time to come in. Internal bleeding isn’t always obvious- but it’s always urgent.
  • Loss of Appetite
If your usually snack loving best friend suddenly goes quiet, or won’t eat or drink for over a day, they are trying to tell you something.

We know that in a city full of distractions, it’s easy to miss early signs- or hope they’ll pass. But when it comes to pet health, early action is the real MVP (Most Valuable Pawrent).

That’s why we offer 24/7 walk-ins for emergencies at our Astoria and Midtown clinics. No waiting, no second-guessing- just calm, compassionate care when you need it most.

So next time UR gut says something’s not right, follow the leash. We’ve got you.
